Weirdest places I’ve worked in – “Clean, dirty place.”

24 Feb

Ahh! I know I’m guilty of neglecting my blog every once in a while, I don’t even think I have any readers left over here. Haha! The one main reason I write sometimes, especially on unforgettable incidents in my life is when I look back at my blog many years later, I’d probably LMAO reading my weird experiences. I still LOL once in a while when I read on my torment I went through in my previous workplace.

Since I’m losing topics to blog about, I thought of doing a few entries, bit by bit on the same topic. Weirdest places I’ve worked in. I’m always known for having strange encounters at work, anyway.

I actually went to this place for an interview and was granted the job on the spot and requested to start immediately. I had a hard time locating this place, first of all. It was located in somewhere around the Jurong Industrial Island, and I remember walking in the wrong direction towards the company just to find a dog caged outside, in the size of a tiger. Yeah, the dog was huge, dammit! When it started barking, I felt my heart vibrating.

Somehow I managed to find the place, and I went in for the interview. I was shocked when I saw the place. The website was wrong! The website told me this was a Chemical Company, but this company was selling detergents! It looked like a totally rundown warehouse, and I was walking really slowly as the floor was full of slippery soap.

When I went up for the Interview, the ‘Boss’ looked through my resume briefly, asked me a few questions on my experience, and gave me the job. All less than 5 mins.

He also mentioned ‘Your salary is totally over my budget, but I’m taking you in as I urgently need staff.’ And then he asked ‘Can you start today, as in Immediately? You have to replace someone who’s leaving (Siti) end of this week, and I need you to learn the job ASAP.’ I agreed.

The place was FILTHY. The blue carpet was turning black, and the boss told me that shoes were not allowed in the office unless you get a seperate slipper for use in the office only. Nonsense! If the office was clean, I wouldn’t mind walking barefoot. But this, TOTALLY contradicting. (Hence, the title of the blog post.)

And there was so much of printing and invoicing to be done, that I barely had time to visit the toilet.
But at the right hand corner, I noticed someone seated without a computer to work with. I mean… Where do you see someone working without a computer in a desk-bound job nowadays? She was just filing her nails, wiping her phone.. Slacking away. She was about 60 plus I think. I forgot her name, let’s just call her ‘Ah Soh’. The only time Ah Soh moved was to go to the ladies and to go for lunch with the boss. And did I mention… The toilet was a disaster. I felt like I travelled back to the 40’s whenever I went in. Ah Soh’s only jobscope is to do filing. And answering phonecalls. Like 3 calls per day. -.-

A while after, I realized that the person who I was taking over was actually new herself. Siti was just a few days into work and she resigned stating that she needs to look after her sick mother. Urm…. I started to suspect that she’s running away from the company, using her mother as an excuse. Then she started bugging me about the pay I was offered. I really find this a personal question and I don’t like disclosing my pay to anyone, unless they’re someone close. I also don’t go around asking people’s pay as that’s just unnecessary information to me. After I disclosed my pay she went… “Wah.. So good ah.” I didn’t know how to react, I just carried on printing.

Then came the Salesman of the company. He was an Indian chap, probably in his late twenties. And as usual, whenever a Singaporean Indian guy meets a new Indian colleague who’s a female, he’ll start acting so cool. Like one big duck. (You know I didn’t really mean duck. I’m trying not to be vulgar. LOL)

I am a big duck.

After a while, he started interrogating me on my previous work experiences and DEMANDED me to speak to the Purchasing Department of all those companies for him to sell his product. I said ‘ok-ok’ trying to ignore him. In my presence, he got the Siti to call her previous company from her Mobile Phone, and he snatched her phone trying and walked off, trying to sell his product. EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL! He came back to return her phone and soon after, she got a call screwing her up, side, down, left, right, centre. Who likes pushy salesmen? Not me.

Whaz yo problem?!!

It was 4-ish already. I finally finished doing all those orders. I sat down to relax for a while and Ah Soh was like ‘Ok you’re free now? Do this filing.’ And left a huge pile of DOs, Invoices, etc on my table which hadn’t been filed for weeks. Now I know why she’s so free. At that very moment, I told myself I’m running away from that company!

After work, I called my sis and told her my experiences. You know, in times like this she’d be really there for me. To support me financially and to advise me if I should stay and give it a shot, or just leave. She told me not to step back there ever again. I felt relieved.

The next morning, I called the guy to tell him I won’t be coming to work anymore. To my surprise, he didn’t even seem disappointed or shocked. He probably saw it coming. I guess no one would last over there seeing all these! So this is one of my weird experience. Will post more in future!
Take care all. :)
