I made my baby cry.

After a long time, Ragu, Prita, Dharshi and myself spent our Saturday night together, mostly talking kok.

By the time we headed back home, it was about 4am in the morning. When I got back home, I got reminded of the time when Sanjana ran out of the house a few times when she was a puppy, at every given opportunity. (She had many boyfriends outside, according to my Dad.)

So I decided to give it a try to see if she would do it again. So I asked her to come outside but she refused to. I found that a little strange. So I told her sternly to go outside while I closed my gate. To my surprise, instead of running/walking away, she just stood up at the gate and looked at me, with her tail wagging away.

At that point, my sister asked me to close the door to ‘see her reaction.’ And so I did, only for about 3 – 5 seconds, though. There was no visible reaction when I peeped from the Door Hole. She remained in the same position but seemed exceptionally quiet. So, I opened the door and the gate to let her in. I noticed that she looked a little bit disturbed when she came in. So as usual, I started chasing her around and playing with her, but she wasn’t reacting well. I brushed it aside, thinking she was being ‘blur’ as she just woke up not long ago.

I went on to wash my face when after a while; my mum knocked the door with fury asking me what I did to her precious one. I asked her why, and she told me that Sanjana was crying. I didn’t believe her words, but came out anyway to take a look. I saw Sanjana’s eyes, it was red and swollen. Yes, I made her cry. Aww. I felt so guilty! I think she freaked out while I left her outside. Maybe she thought that we don’t want her anymore. :/

Sis : “You lah! Who ask you to close the door for SO long?”

Me : “Excuse me, weren’t you the one who asked me to close the door?”

Sis : “Yeah! But who ask you to close for SO long?”

She win already lor. I didn’t know 3 – 5 seconds was SO long.

I quickly brought her to my room and she leapt to my bed to lie down. I was stroking her head in guilt when she used her paw to bring my hand to her other paw and I saw her mouth trembling. Just like how someone is when they’re controlling their tears. Haiz. That poor baby.

Costly walk for dog owner.

A MORNING walk with his Golden Retriever in May last year cost Mr Tan Woo Khiang more than $3,000.

His pet dog, named Truffle, had pounced twice on Madam Ko Ah Huey, 64, who was also out for a walk at about 7.30am, causing her to fracture her wrist.

The incident happened in a back lane of Lentor estate, off Yio Chu Kang road.

Mr Tan and his wife, with Truffle on a leash, were walking ahead of Madam Ko and her friend.

Mr Tan, 46, then freed Truffle, which turned around and charged towards Madam Ko, causing her to fall.

As the retiree tried to pick herself up, Truffle, then 21/2 years old, pounced on her a second time and she fell again and fractured her left wrist.

Her forearm had to be placed in a plaster cast.

At the hearing in a District Court on Wednesday, Mr Tan, a manager at a security service firm, agreed to pay Madam Ko $2,600 in compensation for her medical expenses – which is above the $2,000 under the law.

He was also fined $800 for being the owner of the dog that had injured Madam Ko. The maximum fine is $5,000.

Mr Tan told the court that he had offered to compensate Madam Ko after the incident but her family wanted him to assume ‘unlimited liability’, which meant he would be held responsible for her future medical expenses as well.

He refused and she made a police report.

He said: ‘Golden Retrievers are friendly dogs and Truffle was greeting her but she got frightened and lost her balance.

“I’m just glad it’s over” said the manager of a security service firm.

Like mentioned in the article, Retrievers are generally a friendly breed and not temperamental. These dogs have a tendency to ‘pounce’ on people to greet them, if not stopped from the beginning. This is the reason why, toddlers should be kept away from large dogs as their pounce could land them on the floor, although the animals generally mean no harm.

It’s always best to send pups for ‘Dog Obedience Training/s’  especially if owners are intending to bring their animals out of their homes for walks.

Click here  to find out how and why.

From this article, I assume the dog had not been sent for proper trainings, hence this unfortunate incident had happened when the dog was off-leashed. So Mr. Tan was in the wrong, no doubts about it.

I made a grave mistake by not sending Sanjana, (My Labrador Retriever) for such trainings in the beginning, Now, I suffer almost every night when I bring Sanjana down for her daily walks.

As a responsible owner, I do take my precautions (like leashing & putting on a muzzle for her, bringing her down only after 11pm every night to avoid crowds, bring a cane with me to “intimidate” her when needed) but still, I come across the most bothersome people during my walks. Here’s an example of a few.

COUPLES

Incident One:-

I don’t know why, but the females I come across don’t fear Sanjana when they see her alone, but act so hysterical when they are with their boyfriends. I guess it’s their way of seeking attention but it’s really annoying.

Just last week, I saw a couple walking from ahead and I moved from the pathway to the grass patch on the left (A safe distance between them and me if even if they have to walk past me) and forced poor muzzled and leashed Sanjana to sit beside me while they took their own sweet time to walk.

And by the way, it’s really not easy to control such a big animal like Sanjana. Tying the leash around my wrists make me feel like my hands are going to be ripped off at any moment as Sanjana tries her best to get near people to ‘greet’ them in her pouncing manner.

As I waited, the guy made his way forward quickly, but the lady was dancing to and fro while screaming and ‘acting cute’. And there I was, face all red and legs getting strained and my wrist getting twisted by dearest Sanjana. She was doing this for atleast a minute as I lost my patience already.

So, I went “Excuse me, if you don’t mind, COULD YOU PLEASE HURRY UP?!”.

Wow, those golden words worked like magic and she walked straight to her boyfriend while her face flushed pink in embarrassment.

Incident Two:-

I was making my way out of the lift with Sanjana & Ragu when this obese woman appeared infront of me out of nowhere. Upoun seeing Sanjana she was screaming and literally jumping 5 steps to her husband.

I think Singapore could have had a minor earthquake and people in Malaysia could have felt the tremours.

Be logical lah people. How could this animal harm you when you’re so much bigger then it! At this point, the husband started stroking her face to ‘console’ her and shouted “IDIOTS!!” at me & Ragu. ( & I think scolding my dog as well, but he’s a bigger dimwit to compete with a 5-sensed animal.)

While walking away, I and Ragu couldn’t control our laughter thinking about the way that ‘fatty fatty bom bom’ was jumping. I think the Chinese Vampires would have lost to her lah.. Seriously.

MUSLIMS

Please note I do not have any racial or religious biasness against them but sometimes, I think these people take things too seriously and it could get quite scary at times. I understand that they have their religious issues against dogs but that doesn’t give them to mutter curses under their breath and give me piercing stares even when Sanjana is minding her own business. (This happens all the time, and the people who do it are Malay men aged 40 and above.)

And I get really furious when youngsters in groups start calling her names like ‘babi’ (pig) to tease her to aggravate her even more. Again, I don’t do anything but just walk away trying my level best to avoid problems.

So now you see, it’s never easy pleasing people no matter how hard you try. They seem to get some fun out of making your lives miserable.
